The North Central Chapter hosted a third Judging School to the calendar for 2013.  Bob Lund, our Technical Director, graciously offered to host the Chapter to his garage condo. There, we had the opportunity to look at a few great Corvettes. Primarily,Will Zierhut, our Assistant Judging Chairman, offered to have his ’69 Corvette up on a lift to inspect the chassis.  Will’s car is really special, as it has only 18,000 miles on it.  We also looked at the exterior of Will’s car for guidance on paint judging.  Finally, we had a midyear rolling chassis for inspection and questions.

Ty Truax and the Rochester Area Corvette Enthusiasts club (RACE) invited our chapter to participate in their “Vettes on the Plaza” Corvette Show in Rochester, MN on Sept 21st. We gathered at Dunn Bros. Coffee in Eagan and were on our way shortly after 9am. Nine members drove their Corvettes. We headed south on Hwy 3 into Northfield and then headed East to Zumbrota for a fuel stop. Ron Hendrickson had warned me his 427/425hp Corvette was a thirsty beast!! It was quite loud too, as were all the side pipe cars.

Our plans were to head east on Hwy 60 to Zumbro Falls and south on Hwy 63 into Rochester.

Sometimes the best of plans don’t work out the way we would like. During the trial run two weeks earlier, this was a clear route. But on this day, the road was closed before Zumbro Falls and there was a 15 mile detour through the farm country of southern Minnesota. It was actually a nice detour and we were able to experience some of the twisty roads found on Hwy 60 East between Zumbro Falls and Wabasha. A great drive in a Corvette if you ever get the chance.

We arrived in Rochester prior to the noon start of the show. There, we were guided into our prime parking spots near the band, which was extremely good. The RACE members welcomed us with open arms and were very cordial (which most Corvette owners are). It was a little surprising that we provided the only C2’s at the show, which worked out great, so all the classes were represented.

Our Chapter would like to thank Ty and the RACE club for all their hard work in putting on a great show.

We had a wonderful time; hopefully we can plan another joint event in the future.

Judging School / Tech Session
Oct. 20, 2012

Nineteen members showed up for the joint judging school and tech session on Oct. 20. Chris Enstrom led the judging school and we went over my almost completed ‘63 chassis. The stamp pad surface was scrutinized and was given a passing grade. The last time the car was judged, the pad was painted so I lost 38 points. The new AC Delco fuel pump also passed inspection, which should wipe out the 14 points lost before. My car had an Interstate battery when I purchased it and I lost all 25 points for originality and 15 points for condition. By adding an AC Delco replacement (sealed) battery, I should only lose 12 points on originality and 0 points on condition – a gain of 28 points. I lost a total of 61 condition points when previously judged under the mechanical section. Hopefully I will gain most of them back when judged next August. Thanks to Chris and everyone who showed up and helped critique the chassis.

The tech session consisted of putting in my new wiper motor and washer pump. Bob Lund handled the inside duties and Mark Swanson jumped (actually crawled) into the motor bay to assist. There was a little work involved scraping away at the surface to have a perfect fit, but they were able to complete the project.

Tech Session
Nov. 17, 2012

Two years ago, we removed the body from my ‘63 split window, which started a journey that has been both interesting and challenging. I have learned so much more about my Corvette and how it operates. The education was priceless. I wish I could say the same for all the parts I bought!!

On November 17, 24 chapter members found their way to my home to assist with the body drop. Steve Johnston walked in the door carrying two large hammers, which right away had me a little worried. Luckily they were just for tapping the body jacks if they happened to bind a little on the way down and not for fiberglass modification. The body jacks worked great and the hammers were not needed.

Steve and Don O’Grady manned the body jacks and many other members watched for any clearance issues. My wife, Doreen, was taking pictures and noticed that the area by the rear license plate recess was catching on the lip of the gas tank. That halted the drop for just a moment until we could get the clearance we needed and then we could finish the project. It was a job well done.
